   WHAT IS WORSHIP?

Worship is the:

1. Assembling of the saints of the Lord,

2. On the day of the Lord,

3. Around the table of the Lord,

4. To commemorate the death of the Lord,

5. To listen to the word of the Lord,

6. To cast an offering into the treasury of the Lord,

7. For the work of the Lord,

8. To lift up our praises to the Lord,

9. And, to bow heads in prayer, supplication, and thanksgiving unto the Lord

(Crossville, Tn. Church of Christ bulletin)

This article got me to thinking about what we see and what the Lord sees in worship. We know that God sees not only the outward participation in worship but also the heart behind the worship.  It is obvious that some don’t even participate in some of the outward acts of worship. Some choose not to sing and some even find distractions to occupy their time during the preaching of the Word. There will always be some unavoidable distractions during the time of worship but with a little effort they will be minimal.  These things we may observe but what does God see? He knows if we are giving our best in focusing on the meaning of the communion, if we are singing with “melody in our hearts to the Lord”, if we are receiving the word which can save our souls, if we are praying along as we are led in prayer, and if we are giving according to our ability. I am thankful that God knows if we are truly worshipping Him. Others may be quick to judge us by what they see us do or not do in worship but God really knows. Can I do better?  I will have to give an account of how I have worshipped, not based on man’s mandates, but rather on God’s will.  “God is a Spirit: and they that worship Him must worship Him in spirit and in truth” (John 4:24).
